Before you can say "Happy New Year," electricity churned by the winds blowing south of Martha's Vineyard will begin energizing many a turn-of-year celebration in Massachusetts.

Five new wind turbines located off the coast of Martha's Vineyard will soon begin to contribute electricity to Massachusetts' energy grid, according to the developer of the Vineyard Wind project.

The five GE Haliade-X turbines were recently completed at the site of the Vineyard Wind 1 project, which is located 15 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. After testing, power will come ashore and connect to the New England grid in Barnstable.

Once energised in the coming weeks, Vineyard Wind 1, the first large scale offshore wind project in the US, will deliver approximately 65 MW of clean energy from five GE Haliade-X turbines, enough to power 30 000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts. Vineyard Wind 1 is an 806 MW project, and when fully operational will generate enough clean electricity to power 400 000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth.
