Boston Globe's Take on Canadian Hydro

An editorial in the September 15, 2013 Sunday Boston Globe examines the environmental costs and gains in importing large-scale hydropower from Canada to Southern New England and the debate surrounding the Northern Pass transmission line proposal.

While NECEC does not have a position on the Northern Pass project itself, we do agree with the Globe's argument that large Canadian hydropower must be part of New England's energy mix. It also must be treated like traditional power plants and not part of a Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard in order to ensure that New England continues on its path towards a clean energy future.

"Allowing this to happen would seriously undercut the growth of the Commonwealth's burgeoning wind and solar sectors, and threaten Massachusetts' long-term energy goals. But Canadian hydropower, if treated by lawmakers the same way as coal or natural gas, could reduce the state's carbon footprint without crowding out solar and wind." - Boston Globe editorial September 15, 2013.
