Speaker Biographies

Our keynote speaker Philip Guidice is commissioner of the Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources (http://www.mass.gov/doer/). He has over 30 years in the energy business. Appointed commissioner in July 2007, Giudice also serves as a board member, board executive committee member and treasurer of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and as a board member of the Commonwealth's Energy Facilities Siting Board. Prior to DOER, Commissioner Giudice served as senior vice president at EnerNOC, a start-up company providing electricity demand-management services to businesses, institutions, utilities, and grid operators. Giudice also was a senior partner and leader of Mercer Management Consulting's global energy utilities practice. He currently serves as board chair of the Center for Effective Philanthropy and serves on the President's Council of ACCION. Guidice is a geologist with a B.S. from University of New Hampshire and M.S. in Economic Geology from the University of Arizona and a management professional with a M.B.A. from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

David Anderson is Executive Vice president of Ameresco, Inc with over 35 years of experience in the energy industry. He has overall responsibility for the successful strategic development of Ameresco as an energy solutions company in North America. He has been central in securing and implementing over $1 billion of comprehensive energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. These range from performance-based energy efficiency programs on a very large scale to central energy plants involving chillers, boilers, cogeneration and renewal energy facilities. He serves on the Amerersco board of directors and is an active member with the Clinton Climate Initiative. He has a BS in electrical engineering with a concentration in power systems from Northeastern University.

Kevin Ashton , Vice President of Marketing at EnerNoc, is responsible for leading go-to-market strategy across all EnerNOC business units and territories. Prior to this, he was a brand manager and associate director of the Procter & Gamble Company; co-founder and executive director of MIT's Auto-ID Center, a global research consortium that developed industry standards for networked visibility; and vice president of marketing at ThingMagic, Inc. In addition to his role at EnerNOC, he lectures on sensor networks and related business impacts at MIT.

Dan Bakal, Director of Electric Power Programs at Ceres, is responsible for Ceres's work with electric power companies. He oversees research, working with shareholders on corporate negotiations, and furthering the understanding of environmental risks based by the electric power sector, with a particular focus on climate risk. In 2002, Bakal developed and launched the Electric Power Dialogue, a working group of electric power companies, institutional investors, environmental NGOs, and analysts that focuses on taking action on climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the electric power sector. He also coordinates Ceres's Northeast and Canada program, aimed at furthering awareness of and action on climate change in the northeastern states and Canada. Before joining Ceres, Dan worked for several nonprofit environmental and social service organizations. Dan has a BA in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mark Buckley, Vice President of Environmental Affairs, Staples, directs Staples' environmental commitment and sustainable business practices to protect and preserve natural resources. He is responsible for environmental leadership in four major areas: the purchase and promotion of environmentally preferable products; chain-wide recycling initiatives; energy conservation programs, renewable power procurement, and educational initiatives for customers and associates. An 18-year Staples veteran, Buckley also held several leadership positions in the field of environmental management for Star Market, Continental Baking, General Environmental Services Inc. and the U.S. Department of Interior/Aquaculture Project. He has a B.A. in biology from St. Anselm's College.

Jesse Grossman co-founded Soltage and has served as the company's Chairman and CEO since October 2005. Grossman has formal training in emerging markets, physical science and business development. Prior to co-founding Soltage Mr. Grossman worked in venture development and management, project finance, marketing, and resource use strategies in diverse locals including East Africa, Indonesia, as well as the U.S. east and west coasts. Grossman has worked with energy demand management, solar, as well as wind companies and project developers and has developed and managed projects for the USAID, USGS, and the Carnegie Mellon Foundation. He has an undergraduate degree in biology from Carleton College and a graduate degree in environmental science from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies with business development certification from Yale's MacMillan Center.

Rick Mattila is Director of Environmental Affairs for Genzyme Corporation, a worldwide biotechnology and pharmaceutical company (www.genzyme.com). Over the past 24 years there, he has held positions in laboratory management, health and safety and environmental management. Currently he directs a department responsible for guiding environmental management and performance for the corporation. A microbiologist by profession, he is a LEED accredited professional and has been a member of several advisory committees with environmental agencies working on joint regulatory improvement projects. He is currently a member of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust, Green Building Advisory Committee, the City of Cambridge, Climate Protection Advisory Committee, Museum of Science Green Building Committee, and the board of A Better City. Mattila has a B.A. in biology from Boston University and a master in health science from Northeastern.

David Reilly, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Acuity, www.acuity.com, has over twenty-five years in the building automation and controls industry forging strategic alliances and creating growth strategies in technology driven markets. Currently he leads Aircuity's marketing group focused on the next generation facility optimization system known as OptiNet®. Previously, David was a business development director for Johnson Controls' Corporate Clients group, and for five years performed a similar role at SimplexGrinnell within their Corporate Marketing and Business Development organization. For seven years David led the marketing organization and internal sales support group for the industry leader - Phoenix Controls Corporation. David received his BSME from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and is a patent holder for a distributed environmental process control system.

Dan Sosland is Executive Director of Environment Northeast (ENE), a nonprofit research and advocacy organization he founded in 1999. Under his direction, ENE has grown to a staff of 14 professional advocates working from offices in four states and eastern Canada. ENE focuses on climate change solutions, sustainable energy policy, diesel and transportation issues emission and forestry. ENE has successfully advanced the adoption of policies through legislation, regulatory proceedings, regional initiatives and publications such as the Climate Change Roadmap for New England and Eastern Canada and Climate Change Roadmap for Connecticut. Prior to ENE, Dan was senior attorney at Conservation Law Foundation in Boston and Maine where he was director of the group's energy project. He has a J.D/ from Cornell Law School and a B.A. from Brown University.
