Banner Year for Renewables in Rhode Island

After a successful legislative session for renewable energy in Rhode Island, I had the pleasure of joining Ocean State public officials and clean energy business leaders at Newport Vineyards last week to see Governor Gina Raimondo sign into law a number of bills that will enact nation-leading renewable energy policies that will grow businesses and jobs , and help move the state's energy sector toward a clean, sustainable, reliable future.

Governor Raimondo, was joined by Office of Energy Resources Commissioner Carol Grant, Senate President Theresa Pavia Weed, as well as many other legislative leaders and representatives from NECEC member companies to celebrate the occasion.

"This legislation reflects forward-thinking energy policies that will help us meet our state energy goals," said Governor Raimondo in a press statement that day. "With its passage, we can continue to create jobs, connect Rhode Islanders with more cost-effective energy options, and reduce our carbon footprint."

Legislation passed in Rhode Island this year includes policies to:

  • Extends the Renewable Energy Fund, enhances the Renewable Energy Growth (REG) program, expands virtual net metering and offers third-party financing for homeowners and businesses.
  • Extends the Renewable Energy Standard
  • Incorporates clean energy into the areas of focus of the Governor's Workforce BoardPrepares for the development of a statewide solar permit process

Congrats to all our businesses and partners that made 2016 the year that will be remembered as when Rhode Island took a leadership position on clean energy in New England.
